“I need a moment” Th/Jan 8
I’ve decided to change how my blog works. Back in college, I was a writer for our school paper, “The Winonan” and it was really fun to write about whatever I wanted. I had a weekly column, “I need a moment”. I wrote for 2 years, then didn’t get renewed my senior year…which sorta peeved me off. So instead of just staying mad, I worked on my own underground newspaper, “Censor This!”.
Since my business is building like mad right now and my brain is always focused on work, I felt that writing a blog about my day, clients and dramas, would be something that would help me keep track of memoirs and entertain the blog readers.
I’ll start with today. Today I woke up and was wondering if today I would still be receiving emails about the Strib article. Yep, all day long again! I can’t believe how it’s continuing on. 4 days later and I’m still getting emails about information for the Project workshops, speaking engagements and folks just congratulating me for a great piece. More importantly…I’m being thanked for creating the project and helping out even though I have a business to run. I feel so happy to be helping and will continue to help as much as I can.
When you take the first step out into the entrepreneur world, you have no idea what is going to happen. Last December I spent the better part of the month preparing for the Women’s Expo and putting on my “freshman 15”. I was not thrilled with the weight gain that I got from working out of my basement. Last December, I also only had 4 clients at that point, so for me to start this past Dec with a slow week due to holiday and fearing a comeback of “Last December” and being asked by pure strangers to help them find jobs…creating the project only seemed to what needed to be done to save me and help others who really wanted my help.Business picked up again for me shortly after, but I have found the ways to make it all work. I’m a natural connector and I am enjoying every minute of this.
So on with the day…
I decided to work from home as I had a remote phone support at 9:30 and could lounge around for that. I love working from home, but don’t get those that often anymore. Then I went to the office to find out our internet was down. Yay! Couldn’t do much, so I cleaned my purse and my drawers. My 1:o0 with my business developer Mary Chapa had to be moved to Green Mill where we worked out some business plans.
We came back to the office, still no internet. We borrowed some from the neighbor and figured out the rest of the plans and off I go on the road yet again to a final 5:30 appointment.
Got home and relaxed and called it a day!
A day in the life of a struggling entrepreneur
Just a quick post today, I’m doing some “desk time” to get little stuff done and work on some lingering projects and proposals for the week. Who knew I would become a business developer on top of a computer repair technician, marketing/advertising director. Yeah, I wear all those hats!
Busy day today….this morning I’m finishing up desk time and then taking my dog to the dog park for a good morning play time. I have to go to the office to pick up a mouse for a client and then go to workout, come home and get ready for an all day event that my friend Cyndi is hosting. After that, I will probably drink some wine and do nothing!
What am I doing today for “desk time”….reviewing a salesforce.com demo, thinking of signing up, set up a facebook ad, reviewed projects with my facebook and twitter interns, worked on my to do list for next week, prepared for a new and upcoming “volunteer” project that I’m not sure I have time to do but it’s so important to me that I almost feel that I have to do it. More about that later….
On to house chores and then my busy day! I hope to report more tomorrow…
SHARP UpSwing/Business Networking Expo/Wed Nov 19th at Metropolitan Ballroom
Hello everyone,
Last year while I was just starting out my business, I researched and scouted around for any opportunity to network. Being an entrepreneur, of course I wanted to make sure I attended all of the free events. The SHARP UpSwing event had the best of both worlds…networking, expo tables, hors d’oeuvres and cocktails for sale…. and it was free to attend.
If there are any start-ups/entrepreneurs out there, I highly recommend attending. It was a great event to get you into “networking” without any pressure to join a group or do anything more than just “schmooz” and enjoy the evening.
I usually don’t promote events, but this is a good one and thought everyone in the group should be aware of it. The next SHARP Upswing event (5x/year btw) is next Wed at 5:00-7:30 at the Metropolitan Ballroom. I recommend showing up just to do a walk through and see who you meet, you never know unless you go. Make sure to bring plenty of business cards as the other folks with booths may also need your business!
I will be doing a booth this time around by the back bar with the Pink Call That Girl t-shirt on. There are tables still available if you’re interested in doing a booth.
Please see the website www.sharpupswing.com for more information.
Hope to see you there and come by and say hi if you show up!

Do you own your own business?
Many of my clients are just that…owners of home based businesses. Are you taking full advantage of the technical needs to help your work day be much more at ease? Do you have an IT person to rely on for your technical questions?
Yes, even as a home based business, you do need to have an IT budget. You do use a computer and will have technical needs at some point. IT support is essential to keeping your business running smoothly.
Call That Girl offers a bit more “assistance” to the home based business owners than just technical support. I can also assist you with technical gadgets…
Do you have a smartphone? (Treo or Blackberry)
Do you have a business contact manager program? (Outlook?)
Are you Linkedin? (www.linkedin.com)
Do you use email marketing? (Icontact or constant contact)
How many databases do you use for keeping track of your clients and contacts?
Now you may ask…why would I need a smartphone? Do you travel to clients homes and need address/contacts/email with you on the go? Did you know you can download the map to a clients house and view it on your smartphone? I use those tools everyday when I have a home visit. It’s great to know that I have the info as close as my phone and do not need to boot up my laptop or constantly print all the information out.
Call That Girl today for a free phone consultation and let me help you get more out of your business tools today!

~sent out a constant contact to a group I met at the Gay Pride over the weekend
~created a marketing sheet for referrals
~sent out an invitation to my Yahoo group to a Single Entrepreneur meeting
~invited a few folks to my Linkedin
~sent out a receipt to a client for services repaired yesterday
~updated my client/expenses worksheets
~created a test account for remote assistance
~fixed my rate chart and bio for website, emailed webmaster
~finally…decided to blog again.
I am sending out weekly tips and tricks via constant contact, so I think I will just use this blog as a daily update on my crazy solo venture life I have going on.
Now I am going to clean my house. I just had 2 expo’s in the past 2 weekends and my house is TRASHED!! I will clean until 10:00, then walk Frankie and go to SA. My intern is coming over at 11:00 and I have to call a client to pick up a computer, schedule a social hour, complain to Sears about my mattress. Intern is here all afternoon, then I have a client at 4:15, happy hour at 5:30.
Work day done.
My first “blog”
As I’ve been spending the last 5 months starting up my business full-time, I have been told many times over to blog. I kinda winced and said “I hate reading blogs”. Blogging was the last thing I really wanted to do.
Then…a business associate told me that he blogs and he said it was a good advertising technique, so here that girl blogs now.
Stay tuned for more fun blogs to come!
