Tips for setting up or upgrading to Windows 11
Important to know when you setup a new Windows 11 system
- Microsoft wants you to log in the computer with a personal Microsoft account.
- I don’t recommend logging in with your business email.
- Try to create a new account if you want something easy to disconnect later, not everyone wants their old OneDrive account data downloaded and some people don’t want their data in the cloud.
- I heard from another technician that if you skip putting in a Wi-Fi password, it should allow you to create a local account.
- If you have a Microsoft personal account, you can use that to log in with. Be aware that any files in OneDrive will be downloaded and your desktop and documents will be connected to this account.
Important to know if you want to upgrade Windows 10 to Windows 11
- Find out if your PC is able to upgrade. You can find out by going to your search box next to the Windows icon, type in ‘Updates” and it should tell you if you can upgrade.
- Have a list of all of your Microsoft accounts, email accounts and passwords, you will need them. Outlook might setup fine, or it might not and require you to setup a fresh profile.
- Verify all your data is backed up to:
- An external hard drive
- Is in OneDrive and you see the data in your computer and the online account
- Or is downloaded from OneDrive to your computer and backed up via Carbonite or another program
- Be prepared for some programs you have installed to not function and will require a new installation
- This upgrade will probably take hours and a restart
- Be prepared for a new interface. See the video below for a quick tutorial
