One or more rules cannot be uploaded to Microsoft Exchange and have been deactivated

This is an oldie but goodie fix for me. Back on the 2000’s when I worked in the corporate world, we ran Exchange servers and had to run a lot of switches to fix weird Outlook bugs. This error popped up yesterday, I did my testing and yep, the rules were messed up. I whipped out my old command line  switch cheat sheet and it worked (so far).

This client happened to have cleared all the rules on the OWA first, then created them, but could not edit in Outlook. Therefore, Outlook was the issue.

Be prepared, your rules might need to be recreated, you can try exporting them first though.

Go to your Run or Search line and type in Outlook.exe /cleanserverrules

This should do it! If you need other Outlook help, please comment below. Thanks!

Virtual IT Director San Francisco

Businesses from the solopreneur to the smaller companies under 500 employees all need someone who is technical to help run their IT infrastructure. Like many of my clients in 2008, business boomed during the recession and 12 years later…many of you have grown and outgrown managing your own IT. While many have delegated the “IT Director” title to someone in the company, most of those folks have other tasks to do and keeping up with IT and all related issues is very challenging. Since everyone is using the cloud for data of some sorts, having a FT person is unreasonable and not always the best use of a budget.

This is where I step in. The majority of my clients who call me for Outlook and Office 365 help, typically are self-managing their systems. I help run their Office 365 admin and basic systems issues.  Most call me their “IT Director” jokingly, but it’s because I have admin access to their Office 365 and can step in and help admin on a moment’s notice. I give solid advice and help them run their self-managed systems (such as how to check your Windows updates often, how to close Outlook properly, stop Googling and call me first, is your backup current, call me before buying any software online).

Benefits of having a Virtual IT Director like me!

  • No contracts, paid in 3 hour blocks of time. Tracked in 15 min increments.
  • No HR budget/no FTE, 1099
  • If you have managed IT company, I assist with tasks outside their wheelhouse
  • Fast direct access to me via cell phone and early morning emergency/night/weekends

How it works

  • Onboarding to collect all data needed
  • Then for 2 months, usage is tracked
  • After 2 months, a report will be generated of all your helpdesk tickets and determine monthly pricing (monthly retainer

I offer my clients many services, check out my list below.

Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened. An unexpected error has occurred

This error might be a doozy to repair. This specific error was coming up each time the computer restarted and would make a new profile when trying to open Outlook. This is usually not a Microsoft Exchange issue but a Windows/Outlook issue. I know how to troubleshoot Outlook pretty fast and each one of these small efforts were what I tried to eventually get it fixed. If you are not fast and don’t know what you’re doing, you might want to call me to help.

  • All Windows updates were current, very important to check this first and 1909 is almost required at this point.
  • The Windows account was logged into a weird Microsoft account, signed out and went local. Signing into Windows with an email account also in Outlook can have issues.
  • Deleted all the credentials for Office 365
  • Downloaded 32 bit Office 365
  • Deleted the registry keys for Outlook (back up first!)
  • Removed all the profiles in the mail app in control panel –if you need to do this, backup the OST files before deleting the profiles
  • Reset passwords
  • Launched Word and logged in with the Office 365 account
