What “data” should you be backing up?

| July 27, 2009 | 0 Comments

I have told all my friends, fans and colleagues for 2 years now to “back up your data”…but I wonder if you’re backing up everything you should be. Many of you use the Windows “back up” software. Great, that should get it all. The only back up program I trust is YOU. You need to verify you’re backing up everything you should be.

Many folks also use their software that came with their external hard drive. This is fine too, but just remember to test it on another computer because getting all of that data back in one package may be tough for your workday.

Small office/home office users: I recommend getting an online program. Daily back up is critical for you!

Home users: I recommend using an external hard drive and backing up as often as you feel necessary. Not every home user has data changes daily.

But of course, I recommend daily for everyone!

Manual back ups: Tools such as flash drives, cd’s or external hard drives. I recommend saving the following groups of data…

1.) Your documents folder (which should include your music and pictures) double check! Some folks don’t save all their documents in the “documents” folder.

2.) Your internet favorites.

3.) Templates you use frequently and would hate to have to re-create

4.) Desktop items

5.) Outlook users: Your PST file of your email

6.) Tax forms and bank records

7.) Software and music you purchased online (keep the license keys too!)

Online back ups: If you opt for an online solution, it will guide you through a configuration and  you can make sure you want backed up what should be. They also usually select the common files.

That’s it for today folks, if you need a walk through to make sure you’re getting it all, feel free to cfall for a review. We can do this for you in 15 minutes at a charge of $25! Cheap enough to make sure your stuff is there in case of a crash!

Funday is back for more!

Hey everybody, Hassan here blogging to you from our Call That Girl workshop. Hope everyone had a wonderfull weekend, mine was pretty low key which is the way I like it! 🙂 Just want to start off by throwing a shout out to the MN Twins for embarassing the White Sox yesterday. I’d also like to say goodluck to Joe Mauer in the home run derby tonight! For those of you who haven’t ready my bio on Linkedin, I love the Twins and baseball in general, I also love eating great food. Yesterday I went to a new restaurant with my girlfriend called The Blue Door off Selby ave, in St. Paul. The food was awesome, and if you love Juicy Lucy’s, you have to check them out!

On to some Call That Girl news…
We met with a video design company this afternoon to start discussing some viral marketing concepts. During the brainstorm session the team’s ideas were flowing, and we developed some pretty cool ideas for 2-3 minute videos. Look on the website in the next couple weeks to see our first finished video, I am sure it will be good for at least a few laughs. My project is coming along nicely, I met with a printing company Friday afternoon to go over some estimates on cost for our promotional materials. Tomorrow I meet with the business development manager at Reboot, to finalize the marketing “stuff”, then we will be ready for their grand opening. The date is still yet to be determined, but the Reboot store in Uptown should be open for business very soon. That is all for now, hopefully my blog was able to bring a little energy back into your afternoon. See you all next week!

How to check if your Windows firewall is on

| July 12, 2009 | 0 Comments

Posted by Rasheem Jones, ITT Tech intern

  1. First click on the button at the left bottom corner on the desktop (start button).
  2. Go to control panel, located on the left side of the menu.
  3. Click on Security icon.
  4. Click on Windows firewall icon.
  5. That will take you a screen that will tell you, either if the firewall is on or is off. If it’s off go ahead and click on change settings link. If its vista it will ask for your permission, just go ahead and click continue.
  6. It will then give you the option to turn it on (recommended) or off (not recommended).
  7. After you choose your settings close all windows and you’re ready to roll!

Reminder! Sometimes your firewall is off because it is being managed by your anti-virus program. If you have Norton, McAfee, PC Chillin, Trend Micro, WebRoot, etc…they often time manage everything for you.

What to do when an auto-update fails

  1. First thing I always try when the automatic updates fail is to go to the Microsoft Update web site at http://update.microsoft.com/.
  2. Then from there try to select and install that particular update manually.
  3. If that doesn’t work, click on Get help and support on the web site. That page also has a link to the Troubleshooter page. On these pages you can find instructions on how to get the update going after a failure.

Networking Wednesdays!

Today is my first day of blogging EVER!!

 Please bear with me.

I am a senior marketing major at the University of St. Thomas, and recently began an internship here at Call That Girl!, a locally owned and operated computer repair company.  My internship is focusing on marketing, and I am doing things that are teaching me skills that will be very important to my professional career.  I am currently in the middle of a LinkedIn project designed to bring CTG revenue.  My boss, Lisa Hendrickson, is a LinkedIn specialist and runs corporate training seminars and one-on-one sessions with VIPs business owners, sales representatives, and others interested in utilizing this great marketing tool.

My job was to first “scrub,” or go through a database of LinkedIn contacts and select who would most likely benefit from a corporate training.  Candidates included but were not limited to: directors, channel managers, business developers, and sales people.  The database of about 1,800 people was scrubbed a total of four different times before a finalized list was created for the corporate sect.

After the database was scrubbed, an email was created to go out to the potential clients.  I wrote the preliminary verbiage and one of Lisa’s colleagues, Connie Anderson, helped out a great deal and made some necessary changes to make the email very professional and more appealing.  Lisa and I tweaked a few things and the first emails were sent out to the corporate folks last Wednesday, July 1, 2009.  Thirty-two emails were sent on July 1st, 50 were sent on July 6th, and I sent out 50 more today, July 8.

So far we have not received any responses.  That is ok because this is not the type of thing that someone will usually respond to the day they receive it.  There is plenty of time for them to think about it and decide it would be valuable to them.  These emails also have value because they mention CTG, which will also hopefully bring in revenue when contacts see this and decide to become clients.  All of the corporate emails are to be sent out hopefully by next week! After this, I will take my scrubbed database and tailor the email to VIPs such as CEO’s, owners, founders, and we will start the process again.  It is very exciting to have this project well underway because I am looking forward to tackling the next project.

I am anxious to begin working on our senior center project, which is the next thing we will be undertaking.  A project planning day is needed to knock out exactly what we will be doing to market to senior centers in the area.  We already have some of the groundwork laid, but there is a ton of research to do and that is primarily what I will be doing for the next couple of weeks.  I need to figure out which senior centers to market to, and how we will do that effectively.  Thank you and please keep reading!!!

Hello all! My name is Hassan Shouman, I am the lead marketing intern at Call That Girl, here to help you transform your Monday… into “Funday”! At the start of every week I will give an update on my current projects, give some insight into what we do here, and provide you with some useless entertainment to keep your outlook on the week as optimistic as possible.

First off, I would like to start by giving you a little more background info into who I am. I currently am a senior at the University of St. Thomas, pursuing a double major in Marketing and Entrepreneurship. When I started my internship with Call That Girl in the beginning of March, the marketing department consisted of Lisa and I, sitting in a small cubicle like office “pitching” ideas back and fourth. Now as our business is growing faster and faster we had added a team of outstanding people from around the cities, who work on the numerous ongoing marketing projects. Right now my project is to work with the business development manager at our partner,”Reboot Electronics”, on building different promotional materials to help market Call That Girl to their customers. I am extremely excited about this partnership because it is not only exanding ur clientele greatly, it is also giving Call That Girl a unique opportunity to be the premier Software and IT assistance service for every Reboot customer!

Now as I promised here is my entertainment for the day!
Random computer fact of the day: While it took the radio 38 years, and the television a short 13 years, it took the World Wide Web only 4 years to reach 50 million users.

Thats all for now, thanks for reading my first blog ever!
