New Outlook now supports PST files

Just saw it yesterday folks! Please read this and if you need my help migrating data from a PST to a server so you can use the data more, please use the form below and get in contact.

  • Click on  the gear (settings) in the upper right corner.
  • Under “Accounts” you will see “General” and in that list will be “Outlook Data Files”

You can add your local PST files there, but keep in mind, all you can do is read the email. You cannot move, copy, reply from that PST. It’s view only.

This PST feature might not last forever and it’s not that useful for Outlook super users. I have hopes that this might change but be prepared for a data migration to a server.

PROS

  • New Outlook is super fast for searching and discovery

CONS

  • Cannot reply, move/copy or do anything with the emails. New Outlook freezes when opening a large PST
  • Cannot view contacts/calendar/notes/tasks in a PST file, only email and folders
  • Doing any migrations from a PST to a server in New Outlook is not possible, I recommend you do it soon before you aren’t able to
  • You cannot export a PST from New Outlook, you can only add it
  • No categories, sorting options

Future thoughts

  • If you are moving your PST data to the cloud (MS servers, Google, etc) you can put your deleted items in a PST (for now) and then just add that PST and save yourself server space.
  • I will highly recommend though that any data you want to view in the future be moved to a server like Exchange/Google Workspace, etc. I can help with this if you need to migrate email from a PST to an online server.

We detected a problem launching the new Outlook

This error might launch when you toggle from New Outlook back to Classic Outlook (desktop application). I got this error when I was doing my testing from New Outlook to Classic Outlook. I clicked on the OK button and my Classic Outlook launched fine. If you click on OK and your past Outlook doesn’t launch, I can help you get back to it. Please use the form below to contact me. Due to my not knowing what configuration you had setup, I cannot give free advice on this error.

How to setup iCloud in New Outlook

How to setup iCloud in New Outlook

If you want to setup iCloud with New Outlook, it’s pretty easy!

You need to launch New Outlook, then log in with your iCloud account. Or if you have it setup, go to the settings in the upper right corner and find “Accounts” and add your iCloud there. Keep in mind if you have another email account using the same email as your iCloud account, you might have issues. New Outlook will give an error if your iCloud email has a Microsoft account, which is very common for home users. They tend to use one email account for just about everything. Example….some folks have used their AOL account since the 90’s. They setup a personal Microsoft account with the AOL email and when they got their first iPhone, they setup their iCloud with AOL. This can be very confusing in the new cloud infrastructure.

So for New Outlook, when you launch it and log in, if you get an error, then you most likely have a Microsoft account (or Gmail possibly) and need to rename those accounts so you can use iCloud with New Outlook. I will say that I love what New Outlook offers in terms of setting up accounts to synch without a 3rd party app or software, Gmail, iCloud, and Yahoo (at least it did) synch calendar and contacts.

If you need my help, use the form below. I can help set it up, rename other accounts, etc.

How do I import my old calendar in Outlook into New Outlook

How do I import my old calendar in Outlook into New Outlook

If you just changed from classic Outlook to New Outlook, you might find your calendar is gone. This can happen for a few reasons. First, you most likely have IMAP setup for your email and in classic Outlook, it came with a (This Computer Only) calendar. That is a local to the computer only calendar, it is not in the cloud and doesn’t sync with the cloud. You will need to make some decisions here. If you want to do all of this yourself, then I have a YouTube video coming out soon that should be helpful. Since everyone has different calendar setups, it’s hard for me to do a video for everyone.

Decision #1 is find a calendar synching program that works with New Outlook. Microsoft Exchange, Outlook.com, Google Workspace/Gmail and iCloud are favorites.

Free? Outlook.com, Gmail and iCloud all will sync as of Nov 7, 2024

Microsoft Exchange and Google Workspace have a monthly subscription

Decision #2 is not use a calendar to sync with New Outlook. There are no IMAP email accounts that offer calendar (Outside of Gmail) that I know of. This also goes for contacts.
