Why is Outlook search not working?

Good question! Here are some answers in a bullet form (created by me not AI) and how to fix at the end! BONUS: New Outlook included!

Outlook Classic

  • Too much email
  • Added a new PST file and it’s not done indexing
  • Set up a new PC and Outlook isn’t done indexing all the data added from the email accounts
  • You have too many different types of emails in the profile (POP/IMAP and Exchange for example)
  • Hard drive out of space
  • Search Indexing is not working on the computer (less of this lately, I rarely fix this anymore)
  • PST too large, corrupted or over limit
  • OST is too large, corrupted or over limit
  • Profile is corrupted

New Outlook (since it’s so new, there isn’t a lot to know about repairing this yet but here is what I know so far!)

  • New account added hasn’t finished setting up (this can take hours if your mailbox is large
  • Account isn’t connected correctly
  • Large mailbox (Gmail is a big culprit and Yahoo/AOL)

How to fix Classic Outlook and New Outlook

As I don’t know your exact problem, here are some basics.

  • Leave your computer off sleep mode and on for a night or two
  • Leave Outlook open all night
  • Check the indexing status. It should be at zero 0 for better search results (no search indexing in New Outlook)
  • Try creating a new profile (Outlook Classic) and do not delete your old profile if you use POP/IMAP. See if the new profile has better results.
