Welcome to my How to Start a Computer Repair Business in 2020 series of blogs.  Every story, example and tip is based on my past experience of onsite repairs, offices, stores and finally going remote support only.

I’m going to guess if you are out Googling “How to Start a Computer Repair Business”, you are seeking advice and want to learn from  experts on what you should do. Let me first ask you, why do you want to start a computer repair business? Do you have the passion to work for yourself? Do you not like working for others? Do you want a variety of work not limited by your current employer? Do you want to make more money or grow a large support company? These are the most common reasons techs venture out on their own. But are you one of those that can take it to the level of running a successful computer repair business? Do you have what it takes to be self-managed and wear many hats? Owning a business is more than fixing computers! Owning a business in any industry means you work work and work and work some more. The work is not fixing; it’s managing, doing paperwork, marketing and much more (these things…are not everyone’s favorite). As you read through these blogs, I hope you find enough positive and encouraging information to keep you on track to start your own business.

Moving ahead…

So you may ask….What is my experience?

In 2007, after being let go from a 2 week position with a law firm because “I didn’t fit in” (probably because I smoked and had visible tattoos), I came home with hot coffee in hand, sat down and started putting resumes out again. By noon, I was already sick of looking for the next job I would probably hate and had decided that I was done with this corporate life (7 years) and wanted to do Call That Girl (CTG) full-time. I started CTG in 2003 while I was between jobs, but never could commit full-time. I really didn’t feel “ready”.  Now was the time though, I felt more than ready. Nothing makes you more ready than just getting fired from a job you didn’t like anyway. So I figured I could do this or die trying. I hated working for others. I was always the type that just liked running my own show at any job. I  worked too hard, I had too much passion and liked working nights and weekends. I was built to be an entrepreneur. Done! I’m doing it! I spent all afternoon feeling excited and started writing down ideas I had for the new CTG. I made list after list, and scoured Google for information. No one I knew owned a business and I really was all alone on this venture. By 5:00 pm I had purchased CallThatGirl.biz because the .com was not available, but that didn’t bother me. I just knew I had to have something and find someone to create my website. I was ready to get going and I had a mission….new job, new business, new life. I spent the weekend feeling elated I was doing this, even though I had no idea what I was doing. I didn’t have hardware experience, I was a software tech, all I knew was that I liked supporting clients and taking care of tech problems. I was a helpdesk tech!  A neighbor gave me one piece of advice that I will be eternally grateful for, “Go to networking events” and this is not “computer networking events” but rather “face to face meetings.” I had no idea what she was talking about, so she sent me an invite to one meeting, and after attending I was hooked from the get go. I loved getting out, meeting others and talking to them about their needs and more importantly, talking about me and my business! So as CTG started to gain strength over the next few years… I networked, marketed, failed at some ideas, succeeded at some, learned the hard way.  I grew my company to three stores,  16 employees, closed all three stores and now run the company I finally wanted to run.  What I have passion for: My remote support only company. Yep, that is it in a nutshell! As we move along the blog series, I will give advice the best I can. I wish you well with your adventures in business! How to clear all categories in Outlook

Ok folks this is an easy one, but not so easy to find if you’re out Googling so congrats!!! I was helping a client with a corrupted Outlook database and this took hours to fix! Not just of my time but my Excel experts time. She had to run queries in Access to get it all perfect for us. The issue came to getting the categories perfect in Outlook. And Outlook was showing the old categories. I knew I new this switch fix years ago, not many use this anymore but I know as I’ve been supporting Outlook since the last 90’s!

Go to the run line

type in without quote “Outlook.exe /cleancategories”

Tips for setting up Office 365 Outlook

Hi again! This week I will discuss setting up Outlook on your new Windows 10 computer. If you didn’t read my last newsletter on tips of setting up a new Windows 10 computer, please check your junk or spam or email me for a copy. It was a good read!
Many calls I get are from clients who are having issues with Outlook involving freezing, synchronizing, weird snags or “there are no default apps” when using a 3rd party software. Here’s my diagnosis…these folks all configured Outlook wrong, have too much email, installed 64-bit Office or are using the trial version pre-installed. If 64-bit is the problem, here’s why…you didn’t have a choice when you installed it from the online Microsoft portal. But…you did have a choice; Microsoft just does a horrible job of letting you know you can install 32-bit still. For some reason, they think 64-bit is for everyone and it’s definitely not! If you have issues with the pre-installed version, you can follow these instructions for reinstalling the 32-bit that works better.
Here are some steps for installing the 32-bit version when you’re setting up your computer. If you are having issues now with Outlook, please call me to help 612-865-4475. While the swap of the Office installs should not have issues, sometimes there are other problems causing your Outlook to have issues. I can properly diagnose and back up your email and calendar and contacts before we reconfigure.
Residential instructions first (Office 365 Home), then Business (Office 365 Business Premium)
Tips for setting up Outlook on a new Windows 10 computer for residential clients
Follow these instructions to download Office 365 Home 32-bit from the Microsoft store. Here is the login page https://account.microsoft.com/services and look for “Services & subscriptions” at the top of the page.
Tips for setting up Outlook on a new Windows 10 with Office 365 Business accounts.
Follow these instructions to download Office 365 32-bit from your Office 365 account. Log into www.office.com
This is the area you can see all your applications and admin control panel if you are an administrator of your account.
When you click on “Install Office, you’ll see the options for “other install options” and click that.
Then you will see the box below, select 32-bit version and hit “Install Office”
When you first install Office, launch Outlook and just put in your password and then it will auto setup for you.
When you go to launch Outlook, you will see a pop up like this –>
Exchange:
If you have Microsoft Exchange, this should just setup fine. If you get errors, you have other issues that I can’t explain in a newsletter. I recommend you call me 612-865-4475.
IMAP:
If you have a free email account like Comcast, Charter, Cox, Gmail, etc…type in your email account and this should setup automatically for you. This will setup as IMAP though. Here is where people have issues and such…they setup their account as IMAP and try to import in their PST and this is a NO NO unless you know what you are doing.  This is the time to call me before doing that or else you will possibly have “synchronizing issues” maybe corrupted folders with “This computer only” and a variety of other problems.
POP: 
The POP setup will work but doesn’t offer an easy way to connect to your PST files. I do all my setup in the control panel for Outlook so I can add the PST to the accounts properly. Then I launch Outlook.  If you have used POP email in the past, then you should call me to help if you don’t know how to do this. Setting up with a pop account has more instructions than what I can offer in a newsletter.
GSuite: 
If you want to setup GSuite, you need to download the GSuite Sync for Microsoft Outlook (GSSMO). Please take note, this is not for those that use the free @gmail.com for their email, this is for paid subscribers of the GSuite platform.
If are you setting up a new computer and your old computer was setup for IMAP, please take note that setting up GSuite has a few “issues” and you might not see the exact same folder structure or amount of data downloaded.
