Beware of Phone Calls from “Windows” or “Microsoft”

Lisa’s List of Things to Know

  • Microsoft will never call you to let you know your computer is having problems. These scammers are saying “we are from the Windows team” or “We are Windows calling” or something like that, to scare you into letting them into your computer. These “fake technicians” AKA “Computer Terrorists” as I like to call them, always usually have a foreign accent.
  • Be careful when you Google for help, be sure the companies are reputable and be sure you are calling the right companies. Nowadays, you can Google “Microsoft support” and get a fake company! This is VERY common.
  • Do not call the  numbers on pop up ads when you are browsing the internet, these are fake alerts that you have a virus.
  • Never let anyone remote in your computer that called YOU. If you called me for an appointment, this is ok or calling a local computer repair store, but just someone calling you out of the blue is NOT OK.
  • If you called them and are not sure, just hang up and call ME and I will let you know if it’s a scam or real. 612-865-4475
  • If your guts says no or you feel weird, hang up or turn off your computer immediately. Even if you allowed them in your computer, they will say things to scare you into paying. Turning off the computer and calling a professional IT company or me immediately is what I recommend. Remember, if they are in the computer and you don’t pay, this is when this happens…

Destruction and deletion of data, Computer inoperable
  • Do they steal your data? From what I have heard… this is not common but a maybe, they mostly they want to get your credit card and charge you for fake services. If you did this, you can call your credit card company and they should charge back that service. Remember if they are remoted in and you don’t pay, it is TOO LATE. They will destruct data or lock you out of your computer!
  • Do they destroy your data? YES!! Usually this happens if you ask for your money back and they are remoted in. This just happened to one of my clients. He said he wanted his money back and i went to see what happened, all data gone.
  • Do they lock you out of your computer? Yes, and sometimes they put a virus on your computer if you don’t pay or say you want your money back
Please share this with your parents, friends and family. Anyone that you feel will benefit from this information.

The phone scams are still going on and getting worse and are more destructive then in years past. These fake scammers rely on the fact you and your friends and family do not know what is going on….and they feed on it. They expect you to NOT KNOW. And now you do.

If you want to discuss getting your computer on a backup plan, we can assist. Please call me at 612-865-4475 or schedule a time on my calendar to discuss options. If you are a business owner, please think….is your data backed up for sure? Many people say yes and it’s not being backed up!

iCloud wiped out my outlook calendar

| December 15, 2015 | 0 Comments

icloudOuch! Yes, doing an iCloud update with the backup…might just wipe out your outlook calendar. I just helped a client with this issue. It was easy for me as he just had a local PST for his calendar. He synched it with iTunes. I exported out the iCloud calendar in Outlook and imported back into his PST calendar. This may not be easy for you to do, but if you want help….use my online scheduler below. I can probably fix this for 30 minutes of time. I will also uninstall iCloud or reconfigure it to not use Outlook. Whatever you need, I can do!

When is a good time to upgrade your Microsoft Office products?

| December 8, 2015 | 0 Comments

office365Some of you  might be using very old Office products, such as Office 2003 or Office 2007. While they still might work fine, you need to be alerted of some problems that can happen when using old outdated software.

I will be discussing Outlook as the general functions for Word, Excel and PowerPoint still work fine, no matter what version you have.

Here is what I tell clients when they ask me if they should upgrade their Office products (Outlook)

  • If your Office products won’t allow you to do what you need or want, it’s time to upgrade.
  • If it won’t install correctly, it’s time to upgrade
  • If you need more than one Microsoft Exchange account setup. Old Outlook 2007 only allowed on Microsoft Exchange account per profile to be configured, now you can have way more. I don’t even know the limits, but let’s just say….if you have many, the new Outlook 2013/Outlook 2016 can carry it.
  • If you have Outlook 2003 and/or Outlook 2007, you will need to upgrade if you buy a new Windows 8 or Windows 10 computer.
  • 3rd party software is breaking (iCloud for example)
  • You will need to upgrade if your PST created in old Outlook versions has limits or are corrupting due to over usage or size
    • PST file sizes: Used to be very small, Outlook 2003 had only a 2 gig limit and back then, we didn’t barely use it because we didn’t get as much mail as we do now, nor the attachment issues/sizes. Keep in mind, if you have a PST created back in old Outlook 2003, you might need to make a new one if you are using new Outlook products, I have seen issues! PST’s breaking and corrupting due to enormous amounts of email.

Most of the time I recommend an upgrade is because people have large PST files and or need to upgrade to fix 3rd party software. The speed of Outlook 2013 and Outlook 2016 is awesome. If your Outlook is lagging, upgrading is a great idea.

Updating is pretty easy and should not require a backup of data, but again…you never know. I tell everyone to always backup prior to any upgrade, just in case!!!

If you need help buying the right products and installing Office, just find time on my calendar below. I can definitely help! There are so many products out there these days, it’s sometimes difficult to figure out if you should buy it out right or subscribe.
