Is your family ready for a “Family Calendar”? Probably!

| September 13, 2015 | 0 Comments

iPhone support and helpdesk Minneapolis, MNLately I’ve been getting calls from parents who are struggling to have a “family calendar” that can be synched on all computers, kid’s phones and parent’s phones….and not interfere with their own calendars. This can happen!

There are a few solutions for you, some are free, some are not. It all depends on your goals for your family and how much you want to spend to get it setup. Usually the free synching apps are that…free. So if they break, hiring a tech like me to figure it out can cost a few bucks, but worth it for what you get in the end….synched data between multiple devices.

Or you can spend a bit to invest in a “family domain” and share an exchange mailbox for the family and this solution, does not break much.

Example: Let’s say you are John and Betsy Jones. You have 4 kids all in Jr. high and high school. Keeping a family calendar to schedule all the events of the family is critical these days and how many devices are you using? Probably more than 10. John has a work computer and a home computer, Betsy the same, so that’s 4. Then well wait…John and Betsy have also 2 phones and tablets, iPads, so hey…John and Betsy alone can have 8 just between them. The kids? All have phones and probably tablets/iPads and maybe school computers and home computers! 4 kids and 4 devices? Maybe? So we are looking at MANY devices to synch a calendar easily.

Next question is everyone using the same platform? Some use Apple, some PC, some iPhone and some Android/Windows Phone, some use Android tablets and iPads.

Listed below are my free recommendations, then I will offer advise on a “family domained” exchange account (set up is a breeze! ) = example: thejonesfamily.com

Outlook.com is a like a free exchange server. Might not work great on Android or Android tablets. Works great on iPhone/iPad, works great in Outlook on the pc, not sure about the Mac. It will not conflict with your other calendars as it has it’s own. Always will work on a website browser.

Google calendar synch apps, will not work with Outlook on a desktop without paying for a 3rd party app and it might conflict with your work calendars, not recommended, but if you use the web browser, then sure it will work and apparently has a iPhone app.

iCloud….very hot mess there, but it will work. Family needs one account and everyone uses that on all devices, you might be able to share it but this I found is not easy to do with iPhone because everyone needs their own iCloud account for their phones.

Those are the free ones.

Now if you want a paid one, that will work nicely on all computers, phones, tablets and iPads, etc….consider buying your family a www.com.  Example: Thejonesfamily.com can have it’s own exchange server for about $60 per year and setup on the computers, etc…is very easy and it will not break often. I know that this is a necessity for families and eventually as kids move on to college, scheduling breaks and holidays, etc.

Please let me know if your family needs a good solution or needs help with 3rd party apps. I can help. You can schedule an appointment below. Thanks!

9 reasons Why You Might Be Ready For Your Own Email Server

| September 4, 2015 | 0 Comments

email inboxFolks, I will just make this easy….if you are reading this, obviously you are wondering if your business needs it’s own email server. Even if you are a one-person show, you can have it and it’s now very affordable, as low as $4.95 per month. My migration costs are a one time fee, but then you are good to go and having a good server, has less issues, overall better performance and does the job you need!

Here is the list!

  1. Get out of free email, stop using Hotmail, Yahoo or EarthLink.com. You own a company, use your company branded email.
  2. Too many devices and information needs to be synched. Most everyone today has a smartphone, tablet, iPad, or more than 1 computer. With your own email server, you get synchronized email, calendar and contacts.
  3. Your frustrations for “where is that email again” are gone. Now all of your emails can be in one place.
  4. Better spam filters, yep, your own paid for server blocks a lot of junk email.
  5. Say good bye to iCloud or other clunky 3rd party apps. You will not need this anymore.
  6. Too much email. With your own email server, you get up to 50 gigs of email space, way beating out what your free email or low-grade email provider is giving you now.
  7. Special features such as Out of office, team sharing calendars and contacts
  8. Great technical support. Sick of being on the phone for hours when you have a problem? Your own email server usually does not require a lot of maintenance and if you need it, my vendor has 24×7 support and of course, I am also available and I for sure give great support!
  9. Your current email and Outlook is a big mess and needs reorganizing anyway. If you are in a hot mess, when we migrate your information to the new email server, I help you get it all fixed up better and you can actually manage your email without data loss.

If you feel you are ready to get out of the old and into the new, schedule time with me with my online scheduler and let’s get you there.

Testimonials

Davena Stowers “Stowers Computer Services” I knew with my new shop opening I need something to help me market the new location and Google was of course my first choice. I saw Lisa’s post on Technnibble about her SEO magic tricks and that she had a new tutorial coming out, so I offered to test her theories. Lisa spent some time with me to get it setup, but once it was setup, I saw rankings in just 7 hours and a few days later, I got my first call. I’m now ranked on page 1 or page 2 of my keywords and locations, time well spent learning her tricks!

Chris Michalec, “Parkway Technology Solutions”–When I purchased Lisa’s Guide to Remote Support ebook, I wasn’t expecting to learn much I didn’t know. We have been offering remote support in one form or another since we opened over four years ago. We have provided it to residential and small & medium business clients. Boy was I wrong about not learning anything!

Her book is well written, but, most importantly, packs quite a bit of useful knowledge. I planned to read a section or two before bed the night I purchased it, but I ended up reading it completely that night. I’ve since read it a couple more times and have referred to it even more than that.

It is a wonderful resource that gives the essential info any technician needs to effectively offer remote support. I picked up quite a few pointers, particularly in client interaction, that we have already incorporated in our business. In short, this book gives the best practices from a “in the trenches” perspective.

I will close by saying that if you aren’t offering remote support, you are missing out. And I know of no better way to get started the right way than by investing in Lisa’s Guide to Remote Support.

Richard Ashby “On Call PC Solution”–Thank you!!! I am inspired by your success. I do a lot of remote support at work (I am like an assistant with more responsibility). I have wanted to add remote services to my business model (On Call PC Solutions) but I have never got around to doing it, because I wasn’t sure exactly how to go about it. Anyway, I heard you on Podnutz and read about you on Technibble. Bryce is going remote!!! And I asked a couple of my customers what they thought about it, and they seemed to think it would be a good idea too (these are also my end users at work who I remote with anyway). I am looking forward to eating this book up and using your methods as a template. Anyway, thank you for making this material available.

Jon May, “The Laptop Medics” –“The Call That Girl Remote Support eBook really made me think twice about Remote Support. I decided to open a dedicated remote support company and using the business practices of an already successful company, The Laptop Medics has now grown to five staff in two locations. I would highly recommend the Remote Support Guide if you’re looking to seriously get into over-the-internet support. I know my business wouldn’t be the same and I wouldn’t have grown as much if it weren’t for Lisa’s book.

Jon Campbell “Online Geek”–When I heard that Lisa had written a book on remote support, I knew that I had to have it. From the moment that I bought the book, I began to read it and was amazed at how much info was in there. I thought that I had everything in place for remote support but Lisa has shown me so much to remote support that I never even considered! From insurances, to conversation topics to software suggestions, I loved the book and I love Lisa’s passion for what she does! She is an inspiration! Thank you Lisa!!
