Well, this took awhile to figure out, but once I did figure it out (2x!!).

Removing the OneDrive from Add/Remove programs fixed this issue. My clients were using a mapped drive to SharePoint and not using OneDrive, so removing it worked out ok. If your firm is using OneDrive, then this is not the fix for you. I just blog what I know worked for me.

This is how I fixed it…

First I ran a restore on the clients machine to eliminate the recent updates. File would still not open after restore.

Moving ahead, I searched online and found this fix and it was somewhat helpful in guiding me to the right fix. I looked in the clients control panel and found client had 2 versions of Office installed, Business for Office 365 and Office Professional. The fix from Spiceworks guides me to believe that OneDrive (ugh) was the snag here. After confirming client does not use OneDrive, I uninstalled it from the Office Professional version and the files opened up again just fine.

To be clear…I’m somewhat thinking the recent updates did break this and without them and the uninstalling of OneDrive….it got resolved. Not sure, but share worthy!

Enjoy your troubleshooting folks…
