New Outlook contacts: Why are my contacts so hard to edit, organize, and manage in New Outlook?

Quick answer: New Outlook isn’t 100% ready for contact management in my opinion for some email accounts. Microsoft Exchange seems to work the best, but Microsoft also built New Outlook. Gmail is problematic in my opinion, mostly due to their servers and how they are meant to work with the browser and phones, not Outlook. Microsoft has fields and settings that Gmail might not ever match up with.  Yahoo/AOL/Verizon might synch with the phone but you should test it first. IMAP email accounts from providers such as BlueHost, Web.com, Network Solutions, Hostgator will never sync contacts from any version of Outlook ot the webmail or phone.

Some major problems I see (typical for Gmail users)

  • Slow to work after setting up
  • Slow to synch
  • Possibly not all will sync
  • No groups or distribution lists will work (at least when I tested last)
  • Some contacts will never match the online contacts
  • Fields you used in Classic Outlook are missing
  • Color categories might not work the same

There might be more reasons, but this is what I came up with today. Migrating back to Microsoft Exchange or leaving your IMAP will for sure give you better results. If you need my help, use the form below
