Can I Move My Microsoft 365 Subscription Away From GoDaddy?

Yes but it’s not an easy task to do on your own. Many clients call me to help and I won’t do this myself, I have my vendor do it. They can do it in one hour or so with no downtime. If you do it yourself, expect many calls to Microsoft and confusion with instructions. It’s not an easy “button click”. The process is commonly called defederation. While Microsoft has documentation available, it involves several technical steps that can easily confuse business owners who do not work with Microsoft 365 regularly.

How to Leave GoDaddy for Microsoft 365 Without Losing Email, Data, or Users

Learn how to leave GoDaddy for Microsoft 365, remove GoDaddy’s control of your tenant, migrate licenses, protect email, and avoid downtime during the transition. There is a lot to learn so hopefully this article will help you learn a bit about your tenant and data.

Quick Answer: I’ve helped Microsoft 365 clients for over 30 years. Sometimes I recommend leaving GoDaddy. Sometimes I recommend staying. Many clients call me and ask how to move from GoDaddy’s Microsoft 365 to Microsoft 365. Before I help any of them, I ask them many important questions before I give options. There are two main reasons people want to move off GoDaddy; price and lack of advanced requirements. I’ll talk about these two topics briefly, then I added in more questions I found during my online research that might help you even more while making your decision.

Take note: I am not a paid partner of either company GoDaddy or Microsoft btw. I’ve been working in IT for 30 years and have owned my own business since 2007. I’m a Microsoft Outlook Expert/365 Consultant and recently awarded MVP from Microsoft. I’m an advocate for my clients, both options are using a Microsoft account, so the question is what is best for you and your company. Should I leave GoDaddy because they are charging more than Microsoft?

Maybe. It depends on your needs and how many services you have purchased with them. “They are charging me an arm and a leg,” is what I hear often. I will review my clients’ invoices and find that some are being overcharged due to the wrong license, too many “padded extras,” or they got talked into a 3-year “deal” and their invoice for one or two mailboxes is $700. That does seem like a lot, but it does check out.

One Exchange mailbox with full use of business apps is approximately $238 a year through GoDaddy. For three years, that is about $714. Microsoft direct pricing is around $450 over the same period. A difference of roughly $264. That is when people see it and start calling around to find help. However, before leaving GoDaddy, ask yourself one important question: Are you paying more for support and convenience, or are you paying for services you don’t actually use? Sometimes the answer is yes to both.

Why Should You Stay With GoDaddy For Microsoft 365

If your account has issues , GoDaddy has “Admin Rights” (easy way to explain it) to help you with password resets, MFA issues, rarely ever get “locked out”. I call this “tech insurance”, paying that extra $88 a year to have better support system might be worth it. If you are with Microsoft directly and your main email acccount gets hacked and it was the only account, calling Microsoft to get back in can have a long wait time of 2-3 days to up to 8 weeks. When I explain it this way to clients wanting to leave due to price, most want to stay with them. Insurance.

If you are small business 1-4 people, sometimes staying on with GoDaddy is a better option due to their support.GoDaddy is often a good fit for very small businesses that do not have an IT person. If you have one to four users and simply need email, password resets, and basic Microsoft 365 functionality, paying a little more for easier access to support can make sense.  Many small businesses never use advanced Microsoft 365 administration features, so the limitations may never impact them.

Why Do Businesses Leave GoDaddy for Microsoft 365?

Many people need to leave GoDaddy’s Microsoft 365 due to their advanced requirements for using some of the 365 products. GoDaddy has limited licenses and doesn’t offer you full admin permissions, nor access to some of the products. If you do need to move due to these reasons, I highly recommend using a vendor, a CSP or MSP to help manage your licenses vs Microsoft direct. The main reason is losing your admin access, this can be a long wait period to get back in your account. Having vendor support gives you that “insurance” feeling, like someone to help you when something bad happens. Most also offer support so paying the extra few bucks is worth it.

Their support isn’t often great for some technicial issues. If your mailbox is having a major issue, pushing through GoDaddy’s first level support can often be a nightmare. They are well trained to be the only “technician/sales person” to help you. You can push through them but it does take awhile. I have broke through first level a few times, mostly because I am a paid consultant helping one of their clients. While they do have in-house 365 engineers, it’s still a daunting task to get a problem resolved.

Here are the main reasons clients need to leave GoDaddy

Quick Answer: Many growing businesses eventually outgrow GoDaddy’s simplified management model.

  1. Needing full Global Administrator permissions.
  2. Very few admin controls for the end user. This means GoDaddy is the actual tenant administrator, not the end user. When you go to Office.com and are with GoDaddy, you don’t see the usual administrative portal. Instead, it redirects to their login page with a few options of things you can do yourself. Simple things like reset email passwords, download products, but not much else. GoDaddy does hide the admin controls but if you know the URL’s (Exchange, Entra, etc.), you can get to them. Most end users don’t know this trick, but I do from all my years of supporting GoDaddy clients.
  3. Using Microsoft Entra ID features. Basically meaning you can’t use a corporate enterprise environment on your computer/lack of admin controls.
  4. Implementing Conditional Access policies, GoDaddy’s team isn’t trained on the deeper 365 policies.
  5. Managing security and compliance settings. Again, GoDaddy’s team is not trained on these settings.
  6. Using advanced Exchange Online administration. Same as above, they know basics only.
  7. Integrating third-party applications requiring tenant permissions.
  8. Purchasing licenses GoDaddy does not offer such as Planner or Project
  9. Working with an outside IT consultant or internal IT department.
  10. Needing direct access to Microsoft support escalations.
  11. Requiring advanced security and compliance

Can you get a refund for paid services in the future from GoDaddy for my Microsoft 365

Yes, I have helped clients get refunds due to advanced 365 requirements that they don’t allow. This is the key to get your prepaid services money refunded.

Will My Email Address Change If I Leave GoDaddy Microsoft 365?

Quick Answer: Most likely, no. Unless you have problem with your current mailbox and the only way to fix it is get a new email (very rare this happens but it could)

What Happens to My Email During a GoDaddy Migration?

Your email stays on Microsoft’s servers. GoDaddy doesn’t have their own email servers anymore. They are simply managing the Microsoft 365 tenant on your behalf. One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is, “Are all of my emails moving somewhere?” The answer is usually no. When a GoDaddy Microsoft 365 account is properly transitioned to Microsoft direct or another CSP/MSP, your existing Microsoft 365 tenant stays in place. Your mailboxes remain where they are. You are simply changing who manages the account behind the scenes.

In most cases, your users continue using the same email addresses, the same Outlook profiles, and the same Microsoft 365 services they were already using. Your historical email should remain intact, and there is typically no need to export PST files or perform a traditional mailbox migration. The biggest changes happen on the administration side. GoDaddy releases its management of the tenant, licenses are reassigned through Microsoft or your new provider, and you gain direct access to your Microsoft 365 environment. If the process is handled correctly by an experienced technician or vendor, most users won’t notice much of a difference other than possibly being asked to sign back into Outlook or other Microsoft apps.

I always tell clients that this isn’t like the “old days” when we had to move mailboxes from one server to another and hope nothing broke. In many cases today, you’re not moving the email at all. You’re simply changing who holds the keys to manage your Microsoft 365 account.

That said, I still don’t recommend doing it yourself unless you’re very comfortable with Microsoft 365 administration. A mistake during the process can lead to login confusion, licensing issues, or delays while waiting for Microsoft support. Having an experienced vendor handle the transition can make it a relatively smooth process with little to no downtime.

How Do I Defederate a GoDaddy Microsoft 365 Tenant?

Let the pros do this. Seriously. Defederating a GoDaddy Microsoft 365 tenant means removing GoDaddy’s control over your Microsoft 365 account so you can manage it directly through Microsoft or another CSP/MSP. While Microsoft does provide documentation, this is not a simple “click a button” process. It involves licensing changes, partner relationships, identity management, and making sure administrator access is transferred properly. One wrong move can leave you confused, locked out of parts of your account, or spending hours on the phone with support trying to figure out what happened.

I don’t even do these myself. If a client hires me to help them leave GoDaddy, I bring in a vendor that specializes in this process because they do them every single day. They can typically complete the transition in about an hour with little to no downtime. If you’re looking online for instructions because you think you’ll save a few dollars doing it yourself, just understand what you’re getting into. This isn’t the same as changing a password or updating a DNS record. If your business relies on email every day, the risk of making a mistake often outweighs the cost of having an experienced professional handle it.

If you decide to move forward, be sure to work with someone qualified who understands GoDaddy defederation and Microsoft 365 licensing. And if you need a referral to the vendor I use and trust, feel free to reach out. I’d rather point you in the right direction than see you get stuck halfway through the process.

Before You Start, Make Sure You Have:

  • Access to your GoDaddy account.
  • Access to your Microsoft 365 administrator account.
  • A list of your current Microsoft 365 licenses.
  • A backup Global Administrator account if possible.
  • A plan for who will manage your Microsoft 365 environment after GoDaddy is removed.

I’ve seen business owners spend entire weekends trying to follow online instructions only to end up calling for help anyway. Sometimes the smartest IT decision is knowing when not to DIY.

Will I Lose My OneDrive, Teams, or SharePoint Data if I leave GoDaddy Microsoft 365

Quick Answer: You should not.

One of the biggest fears business owners have when leaving GoDaddy is that all of their files, Teams conversations, and SharePoint documents will disappear. Fortunately, that is typically not how the process works today. Back in the old days, you often had to migrate everything to an entirely new Microsoft 365 tenant. That meant moving mailboxes, transferring OneDrive files, rebuilding SharePoint sites, and hoping nothing got left behind. It could be a stressful and time-consuming project. Today, Microsoft allows the existing tenant to remain in place while the management of the account changes from GoDaddy to Microsoft directly or another vendor, MSP, or CSP.

The goal of a proper GoDaddy defederation is to keep the existing Microsoft 365 tenant intact. Your mailboxes, OneDrive files, Teams chats, SharePoint sites, user accounts, and most of your Microsoft 365 settings remain exactly where they are. The ownership and administration of the tenant simply transfer away from GoDaddy. In many cases, your employees won’t even notice the difference other than possibly being asked to sign back into Microsoft applications after the transition is complete.

That said, I always recommend asking your technician or vendor one very important question before the work begins:

“Are we keeping the existing tenant, or are you creating a brand-new one?”

The answer should almost always be that you are keeping the existing tenant. If someone tells you they need to build a completely new Microsoft 365 environment and migrate everything from scratch, ask why. There may be a valid reason in unusual situations, but for most GoDaddy defederations today, that simply isn’t necessary.

I always tell clients to think of it this way: your house isn’t moving, you’re just changing who has the keys to the front door. Your email, files, Teams data, and SharePoint sites stay in the same place. You’re simply changing who manages the Microsoft 365 account behind the scenes.

How Long Does It Take to Leave GoDaddy?

If done by a professional, the actual technical process can often be completed in just one to two hours, not always “two hours straight” it could be a few sessions or calls to complete the transition.  If you use the vendor I refer clients to, you’ll typically start with a sales call with Jamie. He will review your current setup, help you establish your new account, make sure the proper Microsoft 365 licenses are in place, and then schedule your cutover appointment. The actual work of removing GoDaddy’s management and transferring the tenant usually doesn’t take very long. However, the planning stages can add a few days to the overall timeline. Scheduling appointments, purchasing licenses, setting up the new partner relationship, and making sure everyone has the access they need all happen before the technical transition begins.

Most businesses experience little to no downtime when the process is handled by an experienced vendor. In many cases, employees continue working as usual and may only be asked to sign back into Outlook or other Microsoft applications once the transition is complete. You do not need to hire me to help with this process. In fact, I don’t perform the defederation myself. However, many clients like having me in their corner to answer questions, review recommendations, explain the technical jargon, and make sure they understand what’s happening every step of the way.

If you’re planning to leave GoDaddy, my advice is simple: don’t wait until your renewal date or an emergency situation to start the conversation. Give yourself a few days to get everything lined up properly so the transition can be as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Typical Timeline for Leaving GoDaddy

  • Day 1: Initial consultation and review of your current Microsoft 365 setup.
  • Day 1–2: Purchase replacement licenses and establish the new Microsoft partner relationship.
  • Day 2–5: Schedule the cutover appointment.
  • Cutover Day: The actual defederation process is often completed within 1–2 hours.
  • Afterward: Users may be prompted to sign back into Microsoft apps, but business operations generally continue as normal.

I always tell clients that the transition itself is usually the easy part. The preparation beforehand is what makes the difference between a smooth experience and a stressful one.

What Problems Can Occur During a GoDaddy Migration to direct Microsoft 365

Should I Move Directly to Microsoft or Use a MSP/CSP from GoDaddy Microsoft 365?

There isn’t one right answer. The best choice depends on how involved you want to be in managing your Microsoft 365 environment. Microsoft has a very good support ticket system, and I’ve helped many clients submit support requests directly through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. If you have a technical issue, Microsoft can often help resolve it. However, if you’re completely locked out of your account, you’ll usually need to make a phone call, and depending on the situation, resolution can take time.

If you prefer to manage your own Microsoft 365 environment and you’re comfortable learning the administrative side of things, purchasing directly from Microsoft may be the right fit for you. You’ll have full control of your tenant and direct access to Microsoft’s support channels.

On the other hand, if you want someone else to help manage Microsoft 365, a CSP (Cloud Solution Provider) or MSP (Managed Service Provider) can be a great option. Some MSPs fully manage your entire technology environment. They may install management software on your computers, monitor your systems, provide help desk support, and handle everything from security to user onboarding. Others simply provide Microsoft 365 licensing and are available when you need assistance.

Ask questions before signing anything so you understand exactly what services are included.

For example:

  • Is there a contract? If so, how long is it?
  • Are there monthly minimums?
  • Will software be installed on my computers?
  • Do they only manage Microsoft 365, or my entire IT environment?
  • What happens if I want to leave later?
  • How do I request support?
  • Are emergency requests included?

A MSP/CSP can often provide the best of both worlds by giving you access to Microsoft 365 licensing along with a support team that already knows your environment. I’ve worked with businesses that have two or three employees and absolutely benefit from having a CSP because of compliance requirements, security concerns, or simply because they don’t want to deal with Microsoft administration themselves. I’ve also worked with companies that prefer buying directly from Microsoft because they enjoy having complete control and don’t mind opening support tickets when needed. Neither option is wrong.

I always tell clients that the real question isn’t: “Which option is cheaper?” It’s: “How much support do I want when something goes wrong?” If you’re comfortable being your own IT department, Microsoft direct may work well for you. If you’d rather have someone to call who already understands your setup and can guide you through problems, a CSP or MSP may be worth every penny. The goal isn’t just choosing where to buy your Microsoft 365 licenses. The goal is deciding how much responsibility you want to take on yourself versus how much you want someone else to handle. And honestly, that’s usually the answer that makes the decision clear.

How Do I Verify My Microsoft 365 Tenant After Leaving GoDaddy?

Once the transition is complete, many business owners ask me, “How do I know I’m really off GoDaddy?” Fortunately, there are a few simple ways to verify that everything was completed properly. The first place to check is the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. Look under the Partner Relationships area of your admin portal and see who is listed as your managing partner. If you moved to Microsoft directly, Microsoft should now be the managing provider. If you chose another MSP or CSP, their information should appear instead.

You may still see some remnants of GoDaddy’s old “netorg” relationship. That doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong. In some cases, those references can remain even after the transition has been completed. If you’re unsure, ask your technician or vendor to explain exactly what you’re seeing. Another important thing to verify is that you have Global Administrator access to your Microsoft 365 Admin Center. This is one of the biggest reasons many businesses decide to leave GoDaddy in the first place. You should be able to log in and have full administrative control over your own Microsoft 365 environment.

A few additional things you may want to confirm include:

  • You can sign in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center successfully.
  • Your Microsoft 365 licenses appear correctly.
  • Your users and mailboxes are visible.
  • Outlook and mobile devices continue to send and receive email normally.
  • OneDrive, Teams, and SharePoint remain accessible.
  • Multi-factor authentication settings are working as expected.
  • Your new CSP or MSP appears as your partner if you chose one.

I always tell clients that just because the migration is finished doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take five minutes to kick the tires. Send a few test emails, open Teams, check OneDrive, and make sure everything looks normal. Think of it like buying a used car. You don’t just drive it off the lot and hope for the best. You test the headlights, check the mirrors, and make sure all the buttons work before you call the job complete. If you’re working with a qualified vendor, they’ll usually walk through these checks with you before considering the project finished. And if something doesn’t look right, it’s much easier to address it immediately rather than discovering it weeks later.

What Happens to My Domain Name if I leave GoDaddy for direct Microsoft 365

Quick Answer: In most cases, absolutely nothing. Just because you leave GoDaddy for Microsoft 365 doesn’t mean you’re leaving GoDaddy for everything.

Leaving GoDaddy’s Microsoft 365 services does not require you to move your domain registration. Your website address and email domain can stay exactly where they are. You can continue registering your domain through GoDaddy while purchasing your Microsoft 365 licensing elsewhere. Many businesses choose this option because they’re perfectly happy using GoDaddy as their domain registrar but want more flexibility and control over their Microsoft 365 environment.

For example, you might have:

  • Your domain registered at GoDaddy.
  • Your website hosted with another company.
  • Your Microsoft 365 licensing purchased through Microsoft directly.
  • A CSP or MSP helping manage your Microsoft 365 account.

All of these services can work together without being with the same provider. One thing I always recommend is asking your technician exactly what is changing. Sometimes clients hear the phrase, “We’re moving you away from GoDaddy,” and assume that means their website, domain name, DNS, and email are all moving to different companies. Most of the time, that’s simply not true. In a typical GoDaddy defederation, the only thing changing is who manages your Microsoft 365 tenant. Your domain registration usually stays right where it is.

That said, your DNS settings may need to be reviewed during the transition to make sure your Microsoft 365 records are correct. This doesn’t mean your domain is moving, it just means someone is verifying that your email-related settings continue to point to the right place. I always tell clients to think of their domain name like the deed to their house. Just because you hire a new property manager doesn’t mean you’re selling the house. You’re simply deciding who helps manage certain services connected to it. So if your biggest fear is losing your website address or having to transfer your domain out of GoDaddy, take a deep breath. For most businesses, leaving GoDaddy’s Microsoft 365 services has little to no impact on the domain registration itself.

Questions to Ask Before You Leave GoDaddy for direct Microsoft 365

  • Is my domain registration staying at GoDaddy?
  • Will any DNS records need to be updated?
  • Who will manage my Microsoft 365 licenses going forward?
  • Will my website hosting remain the same?
  • Who should I contact if I need support after the transition?

Those five questions alone can eliminate most of the confusion business owners have before making the move.

When Should I Hire a Microsoft 365 Consultant to Help Us Transition from GoDaddy Microsoft 365

If you have more than a few users, rely heavily on email, use Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, or OneDrive, or simply don’t want to risk making a mistake, hiring myself or a qualified Microsoft 365 consultant can be money well spent. What we do is help review your existing setup, explain your options, coordinate with your chosen vendor, answer questions during the process, and make sure you understand what is changing and what is staying the same. Many business owners don’t necessarily need someone to “do the work.” Sometimes they simply need someone in their corner who can translate the technical jargon, review recommendations, and make sure they’re making the right decisions for their business.

You should strongly consider hiring a consultant if:

  • You aren’t sure whether you should stay with GoDaddy or leave.
  • You have multiple users who rely on email every day.
  • Your business uses Teams, SharePoint, or OneDrive extensively.
  • You don’t know who currently has administrator access to your Microsoft 365 account.
  • You have concerns about downtime.
  • You want someone to review your licensing before making changes.
  • You don’t have an internal IT department.
  • You simply want peace of mind during the process.

One thing that surprises people is that sometimes the best advice I give is, “Don’t leave GoDaddy.” If you’re a small business with one to four users and you’re happy with the support you’re receiving, paying a little extra for what I call “tech insurance” may be worth it. GoDaddy’s simplified support model can be a good fit for businesses that don’t need advanced Microsoft 365 features. Other times, moving away from GoDaddy is absolutely the right decision, especially if you’ve outgrown their limitations and need full control over your Microsoft 365 environment.

The key is understanding why you’re moving and making sure the benefits outweigh the risks. I also tell clients this all the time: just because you can do something yourself doesn’t mean you should. I’ve worked with Outlook and Microsoft 365 clients for decades, and I can usually tell within a few minutes whether someone should tackle a project on their own, work with a specialized vendor, or simply leave things exactly as they are. The goal isn’t to convince you to leave GoDaddy. The goal is to help you make the decision that’s right for your business. If all you need is someone to review your options, explain what’s changing, and answer your questions before you move forward, that’s often enough to save you time, stress, and costly mistakes.

Why do businesses outgrow GoDaddy’s Microsoft 365?

Quick Answer: Businesses need more than a simply managed 365 account. That’s what GoDaddy offers, no fun buttons, nothing fancy, just a child-proof portal. Which is great for so many small businesses, but then the exceptions are those large companies that started out small. The owner bought their domain at GoDaddy in the early years, used POP or IMAP and then in 2017 or so, GoDaddy started migrating mailboxes to 365 Exchange.

In fact, for many very small businesses with one to four employees, GoDaddy can be a great option. Their support is easy to reach, they help with password resets and multi-factor authentication issues, and they provide what I often call “tech insurance.” If something goes wrong, having someone to call can be worth paying a little extra. But as businesses grow, their technology needs often grow too. Many companies eventually reach a point where they need features and flexibility that GoDaddy’s simplified Microsoft 365 model wasn’t designed to provide.

Some of the most common reasons businesses outgrow GoDaddy include:

  • Needing full Global Administrator access to Microsoft 365.
  • Working with an outside IT consultant or internal IT department.
  • Implementing advanced security features such as Conditional Access policies.
  • Managing users and devices through Microsoft Entra ID.
  • Accessing more advanced Exchange Online administration tools.
  • Purchasing Microsoft 365 licenses that GoDaddy doesn’t offer.
  • Integrating third-party applications that require administrative permissions.
  • Using Microsoft compliance, retention, or security features.
  • Wanting direct relationships with Microsoft or a preferred CSP.
  • Needing greater visibility and control over their environment.

I often compare GoDaddy to training wheels. When you’re first starting out, training wheels can be incredibly helpful. They simplify things and give you confidence. But eventually, some businesses want to go faster, have more control, and decide where they’re headed without limitations. That doesn’t mean GoDaddy failed them. It simply means their business evolved. One thing I always remind clients is this: outgrowing GoDaddy isn’t a criticism of GoDaddy. It’s a sign that your business has become more sophisticated.

I’ve also advised plenty of clients to stay exactly where they are. If you’re happy with the support, don’t need advanced Microsoft 365 functionality, and have no plans to expand your technology needs, there may be no reason to move. The right decision depends on your business goals, not what everyone else on the internet says you should do. I think the biggest mistake business owners make is assuming that leaving GoDaddy automatically means things will be better. More control also means more responsibility. Before making the switch, ask yourself: “Do I truly need these advanced features, or am I simply frustrated by the price?” The answer to that question usually tells me whether someone should stay with GoDaddy or start planning their transition.

Should I leave GoDaddy because they are charging more than Microsoft?

Why Do Businesses Leave GoDaddy for Microsoft 365?

  11. Requiring advanced security and compliance

don’t need advanced Microsoft 365 functionality, and have no plans to expand your technology needs, there may be no reason to move.

That’s all the information I know folks, this article was a lot of work and I hope you learned plenty from it!

Should You Leave GoDaddy Because They Are Charging More Than Microsoft?

Should You Leave GoDaddy Because They Are Charging More Than Microsoft?

Quick Answer: Maybe. If saving money is your top priority, moving directly to Microsoft 365 can reduce licensing costs. If fast phone support and simplicity matter more, GoDaddy may still be worth the extra expense.  I’ve helped Microsoft 365 clients for many years and sometimes I recommend leaving GoDaddy, sometimes I recommend staying. Compare the price increase vs quick support is exact thing I tell my clients and then we go down a punch list:

GoDaddy may be a better choice and worth paying more for if:

  • You are a solo user or very small business.
  • You want phone support instead of learning admin portals.
  • You don’t need Power Platform, Teams Voice, or advanced security.
  • You want domains, websites, and email in one place.
  • You don’t plan to scale or integrate heavily with other systems (simple ones like online calendar systems and some CRM still work with basic Exchange just fine)

It depends on your needs and how many services you have purchased with them. “They are charging me an arm and a leg” is what I hear often. I will review my clients’ invoices and find that some are being overcharged due to the wrong license, too many “padded extras,” or they got talked into a 3-year “deal” and their invoice for one or two mailboxes is $700. That does seem like a lot, but it does check out.

Pricing differences between GoDaddy and Microsoft 365 Business standard:

  • GoDaddy: Approximately $238 per user per year for Microsoft 365 Business Standard.
  • Three years: About $714 per user.
  • Microsoft direct: Approximately $450 over three years.
  • Potential savings: Roughly $264 per user over three years.

That is when people see it and start calling around to find help. They believe it’s way too much. However, before considering a move off GoDaddy, more considerations I tell clients:

  • Do you have IT support other than yourself and the internet?
  • Do long calls on hold frustrate you?
  • Can you wait up to 8 weeks to get back into your admin account if you get locked out?
  • Who helps you if your email got hacked?

I often tell clients that GoDaddy has full control of your account, and they answer their phones quickly 24×7 with phone agents based in the USA. Some major advantages if you get locked out of your account on a Friday evening and need to get back in your account now. Their reputation with 365 wasn’t that good for a while but I have felt that Microsoft’s Exchange is working so much smoother and with the 365 Business Apps, the calls for these issues are less than they were.

Moving off GoDaddy can be a bit time to complete and if you tackle it yourself, you will have to learn as you go. This is why I don’t even do these tenant migrations due to upgraded security problems, I leave it up to my vendor. I help clients with the gathering of information, onboarding and aftercare. My vendor charges $35 per mailbox. My hourly assistance can be at least an hour up to as many hours as your team needs.
