Why do businesses outgrow GoDaddy’s Microsoft 365?

Quick Answer: Businesses need more than a simply managed 365 account. That’s what GoDaddy offers, no fun buttons, nothing fancy, just a child-proof portal. Which is great for so many small businesses, but then the exceptions are those large companies that started out small. The owner bought their domain at GoDaddy in the early years, used POP or IMAP and then in 2017 or so, GoDaddy started migrating mailboxes to 365 Exchange.

In fact, for many very small businesses with one to four employees, GoDaddy can be a great option. Their support is easy to reach, they help with password resets and multi-factor authentication issues, and they provide what I often call “tech insurance.” If something goes wrong, having someone to call can be worth paying a little extra. But as businesses grow, their technology needs often grow too. Many companies eventually reach a point where they need features and flexibility that GoDaddy’s simplified Microsoft 365 model wasn’t designed to provide.

Some of the most common reasons businesses outgrow GoDaddy include:

Needing full Global Administrator access to Microsoft 365.
Working with an outside IT consultant or internal IT department.
Implementing advanced security features such as Conditional Access policies.
Managing users and devices through Microsoft Entra ID.
Accessing more advanced Exchange Online administration tools.
Purchasing Microsoft 365 licenses that GoDaddy doesn’t offer.
Integrating third-party applications that require administrative permissions.
Using Microsoft compliance, retention, or security features.
Wanting direct relationships with Microsoft or a preferred CSP.
Needing greater visibility and control over their environment.

I often compare GoDaddy to training wheels. When you’re first starting out, training wheels can be incredibly helpful. They simplify things and give you confidence. But eventually, some businesses want to go faster, have more control, and decide where they’re headed without limitations. That doesn’t mean GoDaddy failed them. It simply means their business evolved. One thing I always remind clients is this: outgrowing GoDaddy isn’t a criticism of GoDaddy. It’s a sign that your business has become more sophisticated.

I’ve also advised plenty of clients to stay exactly where they are. If you’re happy with the support, don’t need advanced Microsoft 365 functionality, and have no plans to expand your technology needs, there may be no reason to move. The right decision depends on your business goals, not what everyone else on the internet says you should do. I think the biggest mistake business owners make is assuming that leaving GoDaddy automatically means things will be better. More control also means more responsibility. Before making the switch, ask yourself: “Do I truly need these advanced features, or am I simply frustrated by the price?” The answer to that question usually tells me whether someone should stay with GoDaddy or start planning their transition.
