AI Told You to Delete Your Outlook Profile? Read This First

I’m glad you decided to research this before deleting your Outlook profile to fix a problem. Taking a few minutes to check what’s stored in Outlook could save you from losing information you cannot replace. If you need help now, please call 612-865-4475 or email lisa@callthatgirl.biz

Clients often find me through ChatGPT when they need Outlook help. But when AI suggests deleting a profile, it may not know what accounts, data files or locally stored information you have. It may also leave out important backup steps.

Depending on your setup and what you delete, some information could become inaccessible or be permanently lost.

What Can Go Missing When You Delete an Outlook Profile?

Here is a short list of information to check and protect before making changes:

  • “This Computer Only” folders: Calendar, contacts, tasks and notes stored locally.
  • Autocomplete suggestions: The email addresses Outlook suggests when you begin typing a recipient’s name.
  • Rules and categories: Depending on your account and where these settings are stored, they may not carry over.
  • Emails that are no longer on your email server: Messages visible in Outlook may not have another copy online.
  • Local folders and archives: Your new profile may show missing folders or empty folders because the original data has not been reconnected.
  • Past calendar events: Older appointments may exist only in your local Outlook data.
  • Locally saved contacts: Contacts may not be stored on your server or synced to your phone.

Does Deleting an Outlook Profile Delete Your PST Files?

Removing an Outlook Classic profile does not normally delete its PST files. PST files can be stored in different locations, including the AppData folder. If you also follow instructions to delete Outlook folders or data files, you could delete information you still need.

Removing a profile and deleting its data files are separate actions. Know exactly what you are deleting before proceeding.

Get Help Before Deleting Your Outlook Profile

Before deleting anything, identify what is stored on your email server, what exists only on your computer, and what needs to be backed up. Don’t assume everything will return when you add your email account again.

If you’re unsure, I can review your Outlook setup, help protect your data and troubleshoot the original problem. Bring the instructions ChatGPT gave you, along with anything you have already tried.
