Will My Email Address Change If I Leave GoDaddy?
Will My Email Address Change If I Leave GoDaddy?
Quick Answer: Most likely, no. Unless you have problem with your current mailbox and the only way to fix it is get a new email (very rare this happens but it could).
If the transition is performed correctly, your email addresses remain exactly the same. Your users continue using the same email addresses they always have, and in most cases, your customers won’t even know anything changed. One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is: “If I leave GoDaddy, do I have to give everyone a new email address or buy a new domain?” Fortunately, the answer is almost always no. Your email address is tied to your Microsoft 365 tenant and domain name, not to who manages the tenant behind the scenes. If your domain is yourcompany.com, your employees should continue using addresses like name@yourcompany.com before, during, and after the transition.
The biggest change is who manages the Microsoft 365 environment. Instead of GoDaddy controlling the tenant, management shifts to Microsoft directly or another MSP, CSP, or vendor you choose. In most cases, users continue working as they normally would. Outlook profiles often remain intact, mobile devices continue syncing, and users may only be asked to sign back into Outlook, Teams, or other Microsoft applications once the transition is complete. I always tell clients that this isn’t like changing your home address after moving to a new house. It’s more like changing property managers. The people sending you email still use the same address they’ve always known.
That said, I always recommend confirming one important detail with whoever is handling the transition: “Are we keeping the existing Microsoft 365 tenant?”The answer should almost always be yes. If someone tells you that your email addresses will change or that everyone needs brand-new mailboxes, ask them why. There can be unusual situations where that is necessary, but for a standard GoDaddy defederation, keeping the existing tenant means your email addresses should stay exactly the same.
What Usually Stays the Same?
- Your email addresses.
- Your domain name.
- Existing mailboxes and historical email.
- Outlook data and profiles in many cases.
- Mobile email access.
- OneDrive, Teams, and SharePoint data.
- User accounts and usernames.
What Actually Changes?
- Who manages your Microsoft 365 tenant.
- Where your Microsoft 365 licenses are purchased.
- Who provides support when you need help.
- The level of administrative access you have.
- The partner relationship associated with your tenant.
I think this is one of the biggest reasons people delay leaving GoDaddy. They picture notifying hundreds of customers about a new email address, updating business cards, and changing everything on their website. For most businesses, none of that happens. Your email address stays the same. You’re simply changing who has the keys to manage your Microsoft 365 account behind the scenes.
