Defederating a GoDaddy Microsoft 365 tenant means removing GoDaddy’s control over your Microsoft 365 account so you can manage it directly through Microsoft or another CSP/MSP. While Microsoft does provide documentation, this is not a simple “click a button” process. It involves licensing changes, partner relationships, identity management, and making sure administrator access is transferred properly. One wrong move can leave you confused, locked out of parts of your account, or spending hours on the phone with support trying to figure out what happened.

I don’t even do these myself. If a client hires me to help them leave GoDaddy, I bring in a vendor that specializes in this process because they do them every single day. A backup Global Administrator account if possible, (not impossible to make but can be tricky)
A plan for who will manage your Microsoft 365 environment after GoDaddy is removed (your new vendor or MSP)
