Quick Answer: You should not.

Very common question I get from new clients. GoDaddy’s transitions away from their management can be a lot for a business owner to deal with if you don’t know everything up front. One of the biggest fears business owners have when leaving GoDaddy is that all of their files, Teams conversations, and SharePoint documents will disappear. Fortunately, that is typically not how the process works today. Back in the old days, you often had to migrate everything to an entirely new Microsoft 365 tenant. That meant moving mailboxes, transferring OneDrive files, rebuilding SharePoint sites, and hoping nothing got left behind. It could be a stressful and time-consuming project. Today, Microsoft allows the existing tenant to remain in place while the management of the account changes from GoDaddy to Microsoft directly or another vendor, MSP, or CSP.

The goal of a proper GoDaddy defederation is to keep the existing Microsoft 365 tenant intact. Your mailboxes, OneDrive files, Teams chats, SharePoint sites, user accounts, and most of your Microsoft 365 settings remain exactly where they are. The ownership and administration of the tenant simply transfer away from GoDaddy. In many cases, your employees won’t even notice the difference other than possibly being asked to sign back into Microsoft applications after the transition is complete.

That said, I always recommend asking your technician or vendor one very important question before the work begins: “Are we keeping the existing tenant, or are you creating a brand-new one?”

The answer should almost always be that you are keeping the existing tenant. If someone tells you they need to build a completely new Microsoft 365 environment and migrate everything from scratch, ask why. There may be a valid reason in unusual situations, but for most GoDaddy defederations today, that simply isn’t necessary.

I always tell clients to think of it this way: your house isn’t moving, you’re just changing who has the keys to the front door. Your email, files, Teams data, and SharePoint sites stay in the same place. You’re simply changing who manages the Microsoft 365 account behind the scenes.
