Happy 9th Birthday Call That Girl

| August 17, 2016 | 0 Comments

imagesNine years ago today, I went to work like normal except my boss and I had a “coffee meeting” planned at the Starbucks at the City Center office in Minneapolis where our office was on the 29th floor. I was hired as the new IT Helpdesk Manager for a firm that was handling services for 10 law offices. I knew within the first few days that I would not probably enjoy the job as my co-workers didn’t really talk to me. The lawyers and employees at the law firms enjoyed my services because they did talk to me and seemed pretty happy when I left their office and their issues were fixed. Something didn’t seem right every day I went to work.

But that morning, after I bought my own coffee, my boss said today was my last day as I “didn’t really fit in with the team” and the “team” was the other mean lady who worked at the helpdesk with me. She was really the manager and I knew going in that this wasn’t going to work. They offered me 2 weeks severance and off I went back home and back to Monster.com with hot coffee still in hand.

A few  hours after renewing my resumes online, I got to thinking of all the past corporate jobs I had worked at and with the exception of one, my position at Honeywell….I didn’t like any of the places I worked. My time at the Mayo Clinic was great because that is where I shined with my talents the most, I built an excellent resume with my Outlook skills. But yeah, I didn’t fit in there either.

Anyway, that day I was fired I thought to myself, “why not try Call That Girl” full-time? Now is the time, I have no work and I have unemployment”. Made sense to actually give it a shot and I could still look for work, right?

The voyage began. I had no idea what I was doing, but I had the internet and that’s all I needed. I bought my domain, talked to a friend about some business cards and headed out to the land of owning my own business.

Through the last nine years, CTG has been through so many ups and downs. Some positive, some negative and mostly lots of learning lessons that helped me figure out that in nine years time, what I really love most is being an entrepreneur. Owning CTG is the one thing in my life that I have been the most successful at and love doing the most. In the past nine years, I have created 6 eBooks, host a podcast show and engaging YouTube Channel, have published numerous “how to” blogs for Outlook issues. My absolute favorite thing about CTG is that I get to work with clients and have networking colleagues from all around the world.

So there you go, Happy Birthday Call That Girl, here’s to many more!

Special thanks 🙂

I want to thank Mary Chapa for being there for me through every single bit of this journey. She was my first client and since 2007 has become one of my closest and dearest friends.

2 reasons why you should check your junk folder

| August 3, 2016 | 0 Comments

junk email folderNever check your junk mail folder? 2 reasons why you might want to start. Many of my clients never check their junk mail folders, but I tell them all the time to please check it!

The rules for why emails land in the junk (or spam) folder are not very consistent these days, in fact more and more emails are landing in the junk mail folder more than ever. Some emails are now getting blacklisted or spamlisted, some have website links that your email considers “bad” and some domains are listed as junk overall….so the best way to not lose out is to check that folder daily.

So let’s start with reason #1 Yes…money is the junk mail! New client requests, scheduling appointment requests, payments, etc. You can never tell what caused this important money making email to land there, but if you don’t look, you won’t see it.

Reason #2 Ever get that question, “Did you get my email?” and you are so sure you didn’t? Check the junk folder, it’s probably there.

If you want some personal help with learning Outlook and how to use the junk mail folder, I offer training and have Outlook Training videos available.
