Quick Answer: Your email stays on Microsoft’s servers. GoDaddy doesn’t have their own email servers anymore. They are simply managing the Microsoft 365 tenant on your behalf. One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is, “Are all of my emails moving somewhere?” The answer is usually no. When a GoDaddy Microsoft 365 account is properly transitioned to Microsoft direct or another CSP/MSP, your existing Microsoft 365 tenant stays in place. Your mailboxes remain where they are. You are simply changing who manages the account behind the scenes.

In most cases, your users continue using the same email addresses, the same Outlook profiles, and the same Microsoft 365 services they were already using. Your historical email should remain intact, and there is typically no need to export PST files or perform a traditional mailbox migration. The biggest changes happen on the administration side. GoDaddy releases its management of the tenant, licenses are reassigned through Microsoft or your new provider, and you gain direct access to your Microsoft 365 environment. If the process is handled correctly by an experienced technician or vendor, most users won’t notice much of a difference other than possibly being asked to sign back into Outlook or other Microsoft apps.

I always tell clients that this isn’t like the “old days” when we had to move mailboxes from one server to another and hope nothing broke. In many cases today, you’re not moving the email at all. You’re simply changing who holds the keys to manage your Microsoft 365 account.

That said, I still don’t recommend doing it yourself unless you’re very comfortable with Microsoft 365 administration. A mistake during the process can lead to login confusion, licensing issues, or delays while waiting for Microsoft support. Having an experienced vendor handle the transition can make it a relatively smooth process with little to no downtime.
